Save Our Beautiful Game Featuring Peter Crouch on Discovery TV

Discovery UK has announced the commission of Save Our Beautiful Game (working title) for discovery+ UK featuring Peter Crouch.

The Workerbee (part of Banijay UK) produced 8×60 series sees footballing legend Peter Crouch return to his roots to try to reverse the fortunes of one lucky non-league community focussed football club. This is a story of Britain’s 40,000 grassroots football clubs and the vital role they play in local communities.

The impact of Covid-19 has left many grassroots football clubs in desperate need of help before they disappear for good. Using his Premier League knowledge, experience and charm, Crouch embarks upon a mission to turn one club around and do whatever it takes to save it. He wants to highlight that grassroots clubs are the training grounds of future stars and at a time when big money is severing the bond clubs have with their supporters, community grassroots clubs have never been more important.

Over the course of the 2021/22 season Crouch will join the Board of Directors and be putting his skills as a newly qualified coach to the test as he sets his heart on elevating the team.

Simon Downing, SVP Marketing and Head of Content, Factual and Sport at Discovery, said: “We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Save Our Beautiful Game to discovery+. The series takes us through an important narrative of community-loved grassroots sports interwoven with heart-lifting scenes of Peter’s homecoming to support local teams. It’s a fantastic story that will undoubtedly resonate with Discovery’s passionate sports fans.”

Rick Murray, Managing Director Workerbee, added: “Peter is passionate about supporting grassroots level football and with his knowledge, boundless energy and charisma is throwing himself into the task. This series will be insightful, entertaining and hopefully a huge force for good for local football clubs and their communities. We are thrilled to be making it.”

The series was ordered by Simon Downing and commissioned by Victoria Noble, VP Original Content Factual. The Executive Producer for Discovery is Jon Stephens, the Executive Producer for Workerbee is Dominique Walker.
